About IMU
History
Inner Mongolia University (IMU) is located in Hohhot City, capital of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region(IMAR) and a famous historic and cultural city which is over 400 kilometers away from Beijing. Being the first university which was established by the Communist Paty of China(CPC) and the state in ethnic minority regions after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, IMU was launched at a high starting point in 1957. Ulanhu, then vice premier of the State Council and governor of IMAR, was the first president of IMU(1956-1968) and Yu Beichen, former deputy director general of the Department of Universities of the Ministry of Higher Education, vice president. Li Jitong, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS), renowned biologist, Class A professor with Peking University and PhD of Yale University, came to teach at IMU and acted as the vice president of the university in charge of academic affairs. Besides, the CPC Central Committee and the central government selected a batch of well-known discipline leaders and academic backbones from a dozen or so prestigious universities across China, including Peking University, who brought with them long-accumulated academic traditions and sublime spirits of universities, which laid a solid foundation of management and healthy academic and campus atmosphere for the subsequent development of IMU.
IMU was approved to enroll postgraduate students in 1962, designated as one of 88 key universities in China in 1978 and authorized to confer doctoral degrees in 1984. It was included into Project 211 for the building of key universities in 1997, listed as a university co-sponsored by the People’s Government of IMAR and the Ministry of Education(MOE) in 2004 and incorporated into the state program for building one high-level university in each of the provinces in the mid-western region of China in 2012. The university was selected as one of the universities in China to build the first-class disciplines in 2017 and chosen as a university co-supported by MOE and the People’s Government of IMAR in 2018, i.e. a university which can enjoy the treatment of those universities under the direct administration of MOE. In 2022, IMU was picked as a candidate university for the 2nd-round building under “Double-First-Class Initiative”
IMU has 23 schools and colleges including those on its north campus, Manzhouli College and Pioneer College. It jointly runs IMU People’s Hospital, the Middle School Affiliated to IMU and the Primary School Affiliated to IMU. The university has its own Advisory Council for Development Strategies.
Talent Cultivation
IMU boasts 11 disciplinary fields, namely philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, agronomy, administration science and arts, 2 national-level key disciplines, namely minority languages and literature and zoology, 1 national-level key development discipline, namely ecology, 18 regional-level key disciplines and 8 regional-level key development disciplines. The university has 13 disciplines authorized to confer doctor’s degrees, 24 disciplines authorized to confer master’s degrees, 2 sub-disciplines authorized to confer master’s degrees, 15 programs for master’s professional degrees and 8 postdoctoral research stations. Biology of IMU has been selected to be built as a first-class discipline under “Double-First-Class Initiative” and regional-level top-notch discipline. Its ecology, ethnology, chemistry, computer science and technology, Chinese language and literature, mathematics, physics, Marxist theories have been chosen as the regional-level “first-class top-notch ” development disciplines. Its applied economics is included in the regional-level “first-class building disciplines”. IMU’s chemistry, engineering, environment/ecology and materials science have ranked among top 1% of ESI.
IMU is approved by MOE as the university which is listed under the National University Student Innovation Program and the National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Project for University(China) and among the first batch of national demonstration universities for deepening education of innovation and entrepreneurship, first batch of national pilot universities for emergency treatment education and the first batch of national-level universities for building innovation and entrepreneurship schools. IMU has 83 undergraduate programs, 130 teaching laboratories for undergraduate students, 227 internship and training bases for teaching purpose in and out of the university, 4 national-level bases for basic scientific research and cultivation of teaching talents, 1 MOE-level base of the program 2.0 for the cultivation of top-notch students in basic disciplines, 1 national education base for college students’ cultural quality, 1 national base for cultivation of outstanding grassroots legal talents for western areas of China, 1 national pilot program for comprehensive reform of majors, 2 national-level experimental zones for innovation in talent cultivation models, 7 national-level programs with unique characteristics, 33 undergraduate programs selected to be built as the national-level first-class programs, 16 national-level first-class courses, 2 national-level demonstration centers for experimental teaching, 2 national bases for university students’ practice education outside university and 2 MOE-level virtual teaching and research sections. Besides, IMU has 2 MOE-level teaching teams for ideological and political education in major courses, 2 regional-level excellent teachers, 2 regional-level excellent teachers of the courses of ideological and political theories and 25 regional-level teaching teams.
IMU has 28,749 students at school, of which 15,893 are undergraduate students, 8,353 master students, 1,030 PhD students and 392 international students. Since its establishment, there has appeared a batch of outstanding alumni at IMU including Shorgan, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering(CAE), Liu Yao, academician of CAE, Zhang Jie, academician of CAS and Zhao Jincai, academician of CAS.
Faculty
IMU has a staff of 1,990, of which 1,254 are full-time teachers including 274 professors and 420 associate professors. The university has 2 special-term professors with Changjiang Scholars Program, 2 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 5 leading talents with the National Program for the Special Support to High-Level Talents, 7 young talents who are with the National Program for Introduction of Overseas High-Level Talents, the National Program for the Special Support to High-Level Talents, or Changjiang Scholars Program or who are winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 8 talents with the National Program for Creation of One Hundred, One Thousand and Ten Thousand Talents Respectively at Three Different Levels, 12 national-level middle-aged and young experts who have been appraised to make outstanding contributions, 2 winners of the award for national-level top teachers, 2 outstanding professional and technological talents and 58 experts who enjoy the special government allowance from the State Council. Moreover, the university has 1 innovation team in key fields listed under the Ministry of Science and Technology Advancement Program for Innovative Talents and 2 research teams under the Program for the Development of Changjiang Scholars and Innovation Teams. It has 1 national-level Huang Danian-Style Teaching Team and 2 National Advanced Teams of Professional and Technological Talents. In addition, IMU has 2 members of the Discipline Appraisal Group of the State Council, 3 members of the MOE Committee on Science and Technology, 11 members of MOE Advisory Committee on Teaching in Institutions of Higher Learning, 1 member of National Advisory Committee on Health Education and Teaching in the Institutions of Higher Learning and 1 member of the Advisory Committee on the Vocational Education and Teaching of Ethnic Skills. The university also has 10 winners of the award for outstanding talents in IMAR, 42 regional-level experts who have been appraised to make outstanding contributions, 142 talents with the IMAR Program of “Grassland Talents” and 69 selectees under IMAR 321 Talent Program for a New Era. IMU has 26 regional-level scientific innovation teams and 26 regional-level innovation teams under the Program of “Grassland Talents”.
Scientific Research
IMU has 1 state key laboratory co-supported by IMAR government and MOE, 1 research base for forging the sense of the community of Chinese nation under the United Front Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, MOE and the National Ethnic Affairs Commission, 1 national and local joint engineering research center and 11 ministerial-level key research platforms in such fields as biology, ecology, chemistry, computer science and technology, like key laboratories of MOE and engineering research centers of MOE, and 53 platforms such as regional-level key laboratories, research centers for engineering, big platform for concerted research on bottleneck technologies and key research bases for humanities and social sciences. Since the 18th National Congress of the CPC, IMU has successfully completed the research of 760 national-or-ministerial-level projects of science and engineering and its 1,111 new projects of science and engineering at the same level have won the approval for support. Furthermore, the university has presided over or undertaken 78 national-level key projects of natural sciences with the support of National Science and Technology Major Project under national key research and development program and the support of national scientific and technological support program. The university has completed the research of 1,122 regional-level scientific research projects and has won the approval of support for its 1,286 new projects at the regional level. IMU has won 1 first prize of the National Award for Technological Invention, 2 second prizes of MOE Excellent Scientific Research Achievement Award in Institution of Higher Learning(Science and Technology), 41 Natural Science Awards of IMAR and Awards for Scientific and Technological Achievement of IMAR. The university has won the approval of support for its 1,425 projects of humanities and social sciences including 19 key projects and 20 important projects supported by the National Social Science Fund of China and 4 key bottleneck-problem-tackling projects of humanities and social sciences and 1 key entrusted project of humanities and social sciences supported by MOE. IMU has won 5 prizes of MOE Excellent Scientific Research Achievement Award in Institution of Higher Learning(Humanities and Social Sciences )including 3 second prizes and 2 third prizes, 288 prizes of IMAR Government Award for Excellent Philosophy and Social Science Achievement including 19 first prizes, 1 third prize of the Award for National Innovative Achievement in Research on Theories and Policies about the United Front, 1 third prize of the Award for the 4th National Excellent Ethnic Research Results, 3 second prizes of the Award for National Research on Theories and Policies of Civil Affairs and 1 third prize of the Award for the National Archives Administration Award for Excellent Scientific and Technological Achievement.
Social Service
IMU has put into practice “Five Tasks” assigned by Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, to IMAR. Pushing forward the modern biological breeding project and focusing on the germplasm innovation of grassland livestock, the university has successfully developed the new breed of double-muscle cattle, realized the perfection and industrialized application of the biological technology system to breed cattle and sheep and the technology system of smart herding based on cloud service, established the new models for the ecological breeding of cattle, sheep and camels and carried out the research and pilot popularization and demonstration of the model for beef cattle industry that combines beef industry and dairy industry. The university has integrated the technologies of adaptive grazing, comprehensive improvement of degraded grassland and sustainable use of mowing grassland to build the comprehensive demonstration zone for the ecological animal husbandry in modern family ranches. IMU has advanced the comprehensive treatment of ecological systems of three lakes in IMAR, i.e. Daihai Lake, Wuliangsuhai Lake and Hulun Lake and come up with the solutions and measures for restoration of degraded ecological systems of rivers and lakes in the north of China, regulation and control of the water resources of these rivers and lakes and multi-function maintenance of their ecological systems. It has given full play to its advantages in disciplines to provide the important technological support for the development of strategically important emerging photovoltaic industry and building of the demonstration base of the integration of the building of photovoltaic town and modern agriculture and animal husbandry. IMU has developed the first system of Mongolian speech recognition and synthesis in China, Mongolian AI platform, OCR system that supports multi-font Mongolian, Mongolian-Chinese machine translation system, conversion system between traditional Mongolian and Cyrillic Mongolian and recognition system for handwritten Mongolian. The university has strengthened the building of the base for “forging the sense of the community of Chinese nation” which is supported by the United Front Department and the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, MOE and the National Ethnic Affairs Commission to provide the theoretical support for forging the sense of the community of the Chinese nation and work about the ethnic affairs. IMU has established the Center for Studies of Mongolia and China-Mongolia-Russia Economic Research Institute. It has co-built Inner Mongolia University Think Tank with the General Office of the CPC Committee of IMAR which was selected as council member of “One Belt and One Road” Think Tank Alliance in 2017. Its Mongolian Studies Center and the Center for the Studies of Mongolia have been successively included into the source think tanks of CTTI. And the university has co-built with IMAR Federation of Social Sciences IMAR Think Alliance for the Research on Economic Strategies of Energy and IMAR Think Tank Alliance for the Research on Demographic Strategies.
International Cooperation
IMU has cooperation and exchange programs with 114 foreign universities and research institutions and the international cooperation and exchange of its teachers and students are deepening and widening. It has cooperated with Arizona State University, U.S.A., Aichi University, Japan and the University of Warwick, Britain to establish respectively Inner Mongolia Sustainable Economic Development Research Base, Sino-Japan Joint Research Center for Geographical Information System Application and Regional Economy and Industries and Sino-Britain Digital Laboratory for Enterprises. IMU has the Center for Studies of Mongolia, Center for Russian Language and Culture, Canadian Studies Center, Center for Japanese Studies, Australian Studies Center, American Studies Center, Hohhot Sino-Japanese Exchange Center and Confucius Institute co-established by IMU and Kalmyk State University, Russia. Being one of the first batch of MOE-approved national demonstration bases for international students in China, IMU is the base for the preparatory education of Chinese for Mongolian international students in IMAR, one of the universities that organize New Chinese proficiency test for international students under the Center for Language Education and Cooperation and the university admitting the international students who have accepted Chinese Government Scholarship, International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship and IMAR People’s Government Scholarship. IMU’s International College of Education annually admits about 600 international students from 22 countries of Asia, Europe, America and Africa, such as Mongolia, Russia, U.S.A. and Nigeria.
Facilities
IMU has an area of 2232.77 mu(about 1.5 square kilometers) and a floor area of 777,800 square meters. The total value of its teaching and scientific research facilities is RMB 1.282 billion. IMU Library is the MOE-level center for the literature information of the ethnic discipline-Mongolian studies, one of the sites of MOE for innovation inquiry of scientific and technological achievements, one of the national sites for patent literature service, Class B member library of union catalog projects of China Academic Library & Information System, a provincial-level key library, one of 16 founding members of Confederation of China Academic Institutional Repository, “National-Level Popularization and Demonstration Base for National Reading”, one of national sites for the service of intellectual property rights information and center for the intellectual property rights information service of universities in IMAR. The library has a collection of 3,627,300 printed books, 3,200,300 of which are in its branch on north campus, 102 databases in Chinese and foreign languages, 1,002,200 kinds of electronic books and 78,400 types of full-text electronic journals. The campus internet with an outlet bandwidth of 22G covers the whole campuses. And the network center of IMU is the master node of China Education and Research Network(CERNET) and its next generation: CNGI-CERNET2.
Goals
IMU has been adhering to the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and endeavoring to put into practice the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the CPC. Focusing on “Five Tasks” assigned by Xi Jinping, general secretary of the CPC Central Committee to IMAR, IMU has been sparing no efforts to put into effect the spirit of Xi’s important addresses to IMAR and that of the instructions given by the general secretary when he inspected IMU, fully implementing the CPC’s education policies and upholding and strengthening the overall leadership of the CPC over IMU. IMU has keeping its socialist nature, carrying out the fundamental task of educating students with noble moral values and bearing in mind the original aspiration and mission to cultivate talents for the party and the country. Following its motto of “Seeking Truth and Being Pragmatic”, carrying forward its fine tradition of “Advocating Real Knowledge and Pursuing Excellence”, IMU has been rooted in the border area, aiming at the needs of China and the latest development of the world and accelerating its “Double-First-Class” construction and building of the university by MOE and IMAR government. IMU is unswervingly striving forward to build itself into a first-class university with unique characteristics which lives up to the expectation of the party and the people so as to make greater contributions to writing a new chapter of Inner Mongolia for Chinese modernization.
